AP PHYSICS: Egg Drop Contest!
1. The egg drop contest will be held during class on Wednesday, January 31. You will have very little time to work on this in class, so ultimately you will need to be creative to come up with a working design in a relatively short time frame.
2. All participants will design their carriers within the following specifications:
Materials:
The carrier will be made of any combination of no more than THREE of the following:
50 soda straws (plastic)
24 rubber bands
20 pipe cleaners
12 feet of yarn
35 cotton puff balls
as many toothpicks as you want to use
In addition to the above, you can use as much glue as you need to use (note: you cannot coat your egg in glue!!!)
Nothing else! Other materials will result in disqualification (and no credit).
3. The first round will consist of a drop of about 6 feet. Any surviving egg (un-cracked) will then be dropped from a greater height. Height will keep increasing until we cain't get no higher.
4. What I need to see:
a) a sketch of your design, including a list of materials, before you construct your egg carrier. (20 points)
b) an approximately two-hundred word description of the physics involved in designing an egg carrier. What do you need to understand in order to build an effective egg transporter?(20 points)
c) Your grade will be determined by your success in meeting the above criteria. The more you show me that you are really trying to understand and apply the physics that you have learned this year, the happier and more impressed I will be.
d) you competing in the event (10 pts)
e) writing a detailed analysis of the successes and failures of your design.(20 points)
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING YOUR OWN MATERIALS!!! I'LL BRING THE EGGS, SO PLEASE DO NOT BUILD YOUR CARRIER AROUND THE EGG!!!
